Since a topic about small teams came up here overall, and for me that’s basically an analogue of a startup or “startup mode” inside a corp.
And I’ve kind of built those teams, more than once. I’ll write down a few important signs.
1/ You’re looking for someone who shares your idea. Or it’s called product obsession. It’s rarely a feature, it’s usually a certain development vector for the domain. Like in consumer it can be gamification or messaging. You’re looking for someone who wants to work in a certain area. And don’t look for someone who wants to build a specific feature, because we all know that most often the core idea goes through massive changes (pivots), while often still staying in the same area (that’s why moving from B2C to B2B feels so painful, because you need completely different people).
2/ You’re looking for group dynamics. In short, all members of your team interact with each other to an equal (well, at least non-zero) degree. It’s important for everyone to see that their colleague is also trying and contributing, even if not always valuable, but the effort matters. That’s why it’s important to create an atmosphere where everyone feels the movement and you all invest into it together.
3/ You’re looking for growth potential, not potential for “applying existing knowledge.” The ideal team is one that has somewhere to grow in hard skills (and not only soft skills). That’s why it can be extremely hard to build something working and fast with a team where everyone has 20+ years of experience. They don’t understand where to grow in skills and accordingly how to develop them.
4/ You’re looking for maximum self-management skill. Because processes kill small teams.
5/ And finally, what people often forget: you’re looking for honesty. If someone suddenly doesn’t need any of this anymore — talk, and only talk. So you agree right away on the shore that if you’re sick of it — say it. There’s always a solution.
Gathering a high-performance team is probably the most important skill for a CEO or a manager who wants to get results.
The topic is big and of course the above isn’t all the signs and there’s a lot more that’s specific to the domain. I guess once I phrase it, I’ll write it.
P.S. You’ve probably noticed that on my channel I have no formatting and there are mistakes and typos often. All because I write posts live and without prep. This post was written in 3 minutes of pure time. Just the thought matured.
