Product post. For the last 10 years I’ve been doing product one way or another in the role of some kind of manager. In all my companies I’ve always been the CEO and the product manager (the one and only). Not always successful, but I always tried to understand what people on the other side of the screen actually need.
On top of all that good stuff I’ve always been into a product like search. And now there are attempts to reinvent it or at least change the сценарии. Because, finally, an answer can be generated based on the information that already exists. But that’s not what I’m talking about.
Across the CIS (yeah, and I think outside too) everyone knows Yandex. I worked there, started my career there, so to speak. And I always considered their search a great product. But recently the guys introduced Neuro. To keep it simple it’s some kind of аналог of Perplexity. (https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/perplexity-ask-anything/id1668000334)
And everything would be fine, if not for the product “bold” decision to put a switcher for toggling right under the search bar. Why this is “not it”:
- For like 10 years already Yandex has been hammering “anything can be found”, “ask Yandex”, basically bringing themselves closer to the verb “to Google” (just google it). Ads, videos, marketing — everything. And that was very right. There’s a cool Western example.
- Yandex will find it. Except nope. They themselves launched a competitor to themselves and right in the same place.
- And here I am, a regular user, I go to Yandex and see two options — so where do I type my query? Because both answer my questions.
- Cognitive dissonance when choosing between hard-to-distinguish options is a disaster. And I’m extremely surprised the product folks behind this decision don’t know that.
The reason most likely exists and it’s hidden in chasing the hype from Western коллеги. Because we can do it too, and even cooler. And I also suspect they weren’t afraid to do it because mostly queries without expensive ad listings will flow there (facts and the like).

Perplexity. (https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/perplexity-ask-anything/id1668000334)
