Remember the release of DeepMind’s AlphaGo, the program that played Go better than humans. Up to that point this game was considered the most high-variance and difficult board game, and by beating a human the AI showed, like, yeah, you can even learn by playing against yourself and still be better (i.e. without a dataset of games, just the rules—basically the games were generated by the program itself. That version was called AlphaZero) than all players.

So yeah, that was in 2015–16. And there’s an effect. You won’t believe it, but Go players became more inventive and better. After a few years, the weakest pro players started playing better than the strongest players before the AI release.

This is a great example of the thesis “AI will help pros get better, you just need the desire to grow and learn new stuff.”
