Thanks to everyone who voted. I’ll throw in my two cents.

There are a few aspects I’ve run into, and I’ll just list my take on them:
- founders & founding team are different things to me: the first are the exact people the question is about, the second are those who were just around at the beginning
- founders, besides carrying beneficial responsibility like shared risks, are the engines of the company being created, and my brain just can’t fit how the main people can own 1% at the moment the company is created
- if we’re talking about venture companies, what matters is how investors look at it, and there’s a consolidated opinion here — if you’ve got more than 10% it means you have to be taken into account, seriously (usually in my practice it’s already 5–10%); sitting on the sidelines and not deciding anything with 10%+ won’t fly anymore
- a position is possible where that status is agreed internally between shareholders and basically the person uses it (like, you’ve got 1% but you asked if you can be called that — they told you ok); investors’ attitude to this doesn’t change: if you’ve got less than 10% you’re unlikely to be able to later, when raising money, confidently say that (it’s often checked as part of the background check in PitchBook and they take references on you)

In short, I consider it responsibility, not status. If someone assigns themselves that status — ask what the person was responsible for and what they did for the company, and then preferably verify it.

And as YC writes:
If you don’t value your co-founders, neither will anyone else.

If you don’t value your co-founders, neither will anyone else.
