Very often I get a question like this, like hey tell me what hidden trends are there right now and everything’s super there, but NO ONE sees it. The question:
Where do you think, in what direction/domain, the stream is gurgling/boiling right now. Something is changing substantially, but it’s not noticeable. What in your view is really undervalued and deprived of attention by the tech industry. Everyone’s predicting trends, discussing something mainstream. For example, it seems to me the unsexy directions are undervalued: religion/church or caring for retirees and how they spend their time. I remember how Google Play was starting out and it immediately wasn’t very sexy. Both as a platform and the products that were on it.
🙂
Well let’s start with the fact that trends are a pretty fast thing that fades out, and since I’m a consumer-type person, for me there are basic signs of where a trend can be and where it can’t. So, let’s start with where it can’t:
- anything 30+ can’t be sexy anymore, it’s a complicated, tedious topic where breaking a user’s habit is really hard, and also 30+ (age) have extremely limited social ties, few friends, they’re way less actively social, so targeting that at the very least makes the road harder
- accepting the fact that 30+ is a so-so topic, you can immediately throw out all sorts of religion and elder care
- next, insufficient density: a trend can’t take off on an audience that isn’t connected internally to each other in any way, which is why trends are often in schools, unis, communities
And finally if you want to ride a trend, ride AI or whatever is publicly obvious is taking off. Because it’s easiest to take off on a wave and get attention from both the audience and investors.
