One of the properties of communities that I’ve noticed.
I’m in a hundred different Discords, and in general I read Reddit fairly regularly (well, like once a week). A lot of gaming communities live for a really long time (I’m not talking about teams or guilds). They can develop for years. Well, as long as the game works.
On the other hand, I’ve also been in dozens, maybe even a hundred, professional chats. You know, those investor/founder and whatnot ones. Very rarely did those manage to survive. All those product chats where, like, the wind is already blowing through after a couple months.
So yeah, one of the reasons is that people who are more or less the same level aren’t interested in being together. Boring. They’ve got nothing to write. In gaming communities the skill level is usually different and people are constantly asking stuff or looking for someone to play with. From that a pretty simple conclusion suggested itself: want to make a cool long-living community — don’t make it narrowly professional, try to unite around something where there will be completely different people and experience. In short, diversity, to some degree, is a very important thing.
