Part one
I’ll tell you a bit about our original project idea. We started by tackling the thing every game dev and game-adjacent service in the world wants to solve (a sea of projects). Finding buddies/a team to play with.
At first glance LFG — looking for group — is a pretty obvious and big problem. For real, in a lot of games you want to find a decent partner or a team, and one that fits your schedule too, and actually gets it. But then the question comes up: if this is the holy grail of gamedev, why does basically nobody — not publishers/devs inside the game, and even more so not external services that aren’t constrained by the content release pipeline — really manage to pull it off? Let’s try to answer.
We started testing the hypothesis on existing communities in Discord. We made a bot (by the way it’s got the checkmark and all that, and it’s still hooked up to thousands of servers), whose job was to let you assemble your own group/find someone by set criteria, and the “killer feature” was supposed to be that it’s not just a dumb post in a channel — the bot can post to other servers too and also look at your game experience and stats. And even on ready-made communities it had mixed success.
The closest analogy is dating, and yeah, it’s true — we’re looking for people to play. And here it’s important to understand: the criteria by which someone “fits” matter, and how critical they are. Also the timeframe in which the choice happens matters.
