Pretty often I hear this take that when you pitch an investor you should act like you’re basically hiring a co-founder into your company. Like a “looking for a workhorse who’ll grind with me till they drop dead” kind of approach.
But that’s not true at all. It’s some myth from the Valley of
dreams
near San Francisco. An investor is an investor precisely because, at this point, he doesn’t want to build anything with his own hands full-time — otherwise why the hell work at a fund if you want to do a startup.
And yeah, his job is to help the company, find the right people, bring in capital and all that. But not to work with you permanently. His job is to make money off you. And that’s honest. And those are exactly the ones you should be looking for — the ones who’ll see in you the person who’ll make money and change the world, and who’ll help you with their experience and knowledge and yeah MONEY!
