Based on weekend thoughts and watching the last few years of the investments-and-startups world.
I’m betting that, in today’s sense, the early-stage startup industry will collapse within 10 years. The economy just doesn’t run on the “garage revolution” commandments in tech anymore.

The modern ideology and approach to building tech companies is “a garage and a late-70s team.” And its continuation as the 2000s software industry. Unfortunately, time’s up. The market is different and grown-up. My analogy is the auto industry. At the start of the 20th century it was easy to just build an engine in a garage and even put a car together. Not now. Funds stopped a long time ago looking at “let’s build a car in a garage” as a potential big story. Systemically.

Now we’re entering the same cycle in tech. Making something truly big—the kind the modern venture industry is built for—becomes basically impossible (early-stage startup stats). SaaS is essentially turning into car washes that locally (on the internet) service big businesses. Consumer product has, for the most part, collapsed into content, which is, well, very expensive. And traffic, and how it keeps getting more expensive, is proof of that. The “put in a million, get a return” economics just doesn’t work anymore.

And then the conclusion is: you need to reduce the number of investments and increase their size. So there’s a chance to build a business. Only a limited number of funds can play that game. Everyone else will be left with the market of pumping teams up to an acquihire. Yeah yeah. All m&a already right now is really just buying teams and people. And big buys and x’s will be a rarity. Early-stage funds will die by the hundreds. Because they can’t deliver the required return.

It was fun. But the industry grew up. Time to move on.
