In short, s1 from Anthropic and their upcoming IPO reflects pretty much every worry the industry has. And it’s obviously not about “AI bubble lol bullshit” or “ahahaha the company’s scamming us, it’s all losses.”

Read a ton of takes, here are my two cents:
1/ the filing is very damn serious, all the numbers are strong in a good way. They actually are profitable, they actually retain customers insanely well (900% revenue retention is nonsense, a typical SaaS benchmark was like 120%, i.e. companies start paying way more than when they started). All the tricky bits are addressed: yes, inference is super high-margin, yes, we pay people a lot, like a lot, yes, we’ve got a ton of cash on the balance sheet and interest brings in a yard, yes, we booked a huge amount of compute years ahead. And here comes the next chapter.
2/ in ten years they’re supposed to be doing 1T usd in sales. Which looks very serious. That’s Walmart/Amazon territory but with 27.5% margin, not 1-2-3-4-5%. That’s basically the main risk if we’re being honest. Any situation where revenue starts dropping or growing way slower than the required pace means the guidance doesn’t get hit and the stock goes down. Actually, not quite. It just won’t go up, which means for retail the story becomes uninteresting. And IPOs are about retail. And this is where compute orders matter. You don’t hold revenue — you’ve got nothing to pay with. And then it all starts folding like a house of cards.
3/ AI itself is here forever. A lot of marketing. But at least it’s a bit more restrained than OpenAI. Basically the main PR bet is that AI gives a huge economic effect for GDP and in general, in theory, can replace people in a lot of places. That bet is very strong, but it also depends on whether you can sell those capabilities and whether you can actually deliver them. Even if AI is way better than people, does everyone need that quality, and are there moments when humans are cheaper or faster? No answers yet. But you need to keep those questions in your head.
4/ the company is priced well, models are the best (well, or almost the best), production cycle is set up, they know how to retain customers, there’s plenty of time. Look, all the contracts are very long. So there’s room to maneuver. Also, model-wise, a bunch of correct decisions were made to reduce competition from distillation and the like. Less of a bet on science and marketing around something that’s hard to understand how to sell on the stock market. But OpenAI lately is hitting retail harder. Pouring money into science is “prestigious.” All that’s left is to start selling warp drive to the masses. Won’t even mention lightsabers :)
My honest valuation is like ~1.5T. That’s like 15–20x annual revenue. Roughly on the level of the growing hype leaders like Nvidia. Meaning if revenue growth holds, expect a new top-5 next year or in 28.
