A lot of stuff has piled up that I’d like to write about. There’s s1 Anthropic in there, and various other lending crises of the compute business. But I’ll start, I guess, with math.
Note: I’m not a scientist and even less a mathematician. But I spent half my life in math and was pretty deeply into it, I even used to go to the Steklov Institute at the Russian Academy of Sciences. Well, those who know, will get it.

So. OpenAI dropped a seriously strong result last week. This isn’t some little trifles. This is something on the order of a Fields Medal (the Nobel analogue but for math). Very cool stuff. Sure, it still has to go through review. But still.

So I think a very important time has come in mathematical disciplines. Moving in certain domains has become easy, and what’s left is to understand where to move. I think a big chunk of math was so far removed from the applied part that it developed as theory with no clear angle on how to use it. I think in places like that AI will help like hell. The scientist just needs to set the vector and it’ll find it, connect it, and prove it. Proof for the sake of proofs will start to vanish, and that was a huge layer of math.

But I think the real juice isn’t in those areas. It’s in that very theoretical physics, or in areas at the junction of several sciences or directions. The most interesting thing is where AI will find something a human, due to the sheer size of the field, simply couldn’t pick out and line up. How much new stuff you can learn. And here, without “human in the loop,” I think there’s still no getting around it for now. It still doesn’t really go, building new concepts without being pointed. But it does brute force like a master.

So it’ll become more interesting to go into science. And all sorts of purely-theoretical, three-level nudges will disappear. Because it’ll be way more important to be able to connect it to experiment and reality.

But time will tell.

И тут без «human in the loop» думаю пока никуда.
