I’ve been wanting to write a small post for a while (while we’re, damn it, actively working on the release, just one feature left to finish off). About “we hit 10M ARR within 1 month”. You can plug any numbers you want into that sentence. I’m mostly talking about consumer/prosumer and all that b2c stuff.

For many many years everyone’s been saying it’s important to find CAC/LTV and then just pour money in. But what usually happens is a slow death, especially if the project is venture-backed.

A short action plan today:
1/ take AI, shove a model in (usually a ready-made one, God willing at least tuned, or with an if-pipeline on top) or slap a chat on the side of any product (literally any, chat is such a great UX)
2/ hire a team of folks with a couple-three years of failed or successful experiments
3/ go raise a round, or apply to YC 3–4 times (often they take you for persistence and people, because people matter more, and jamming your idea into the current trend is pretty easy)
4/ build the product, ideally catch a mini-viral wave and then at the end of the viral cycle start mercilessly flooding all paid marketing (money spent/revenue is how teams think, they just divide spend by revenue and get this omega blended CAC metric), which also includes a TikTok farm and so on (they cite 1–2 outliers/exceptions from the market where in reality they just got lucky)

Then the exact same thing happens as in the late 2000s and mid 10s and so on, but for some reason “this is different”. Namely:
1/ so yeah, launch happened, it took off to a thousand users and they even paid, but the problem is there’s no fast, equally pretty organic
2/ ahaaaa, we’ve got money, let’s buy (doesn’t matter if it’s TikTok, Facebook, Google etc)
3/ WOW! look it matches up, whoa whoa, scaling mercilessly — this is that very moment
X M USD ARR WITHIN X WEEKS
4/ keep burning money and go raise more, and preferably faster because — that very moment
5/ then we scale and suddenly boom, top-line ceiling, how come our payback period isn’t 9 months but 12, oops it’s 18
6/ then optimizations start (maybe they were there from the start), games with conversions, landing pages, etc, but that’s not the problem
7/ subscription options, whatever, anything — as long as we don’t use our brains

What’s the reason. Well most often it’s banal:
1/ Paid UA gets copied by all competitors in one-two if they see you buying successfully, and if you don’t have product features that make the cost of quitting huge then gg (could be a friends graph, could be work docs or something else, preferably multiplayer or linkage to past data — social capital)
2/ the founder team during this kind of scaling has it really hard — purely mentally it’s hellish vibes and massive pressure — everyone underestimates this reason, and it’s exactly in these moments that monstrous mistakes happen (either dump money into everything or say screw everyone and do pivots)
3/ counting everything as blended CAC is a mistake, you need to very clearly separate all channels and watch market trends and tech, plus constantly estimate the potential capacity of the available audience
4/ underestimating the novelty factor — all of AI is exactly that, you need to carefully study NRR (net dollar retention in your market) and find a way to hold it, because most people just came to try it
5/ scaling effects work against you in paid, because everyone’s already seen the creatives and the people who haven’t are few or they’re less interested in the product (meaning more expensive)

A lot of people have noted that all these lessons are here (https://www.slideshare.net/wahengchang/dropbox-startup-lessons-learned-239520249#1)

P.S. none of this means founders won’t make money, they easily will by pumping valuation to a billion and selling their shares (well, part of them), there’s just no business in all this, and no company over the long run either

Про "we hit 10M ARR within 1 month".
Х M USD ARR WITHIN X WEEKS
