So, recently
Mary Meeker put out a report (https://www.bondcap.com/reports/tai)
— the same one who used to crank out reports about the internet and whatnot. I don’t share that puppy-eyed delight; the report is apparently made for people who don’t read the internet or aren’t interested in the topic. Plus, the conclusions and logic are really stretched to fit whatever story.
Unprecedented Growth!
In reality I opened literally the very beginning and there’s slide 4, like hey look, Charts Paint Thousands of Words… (charts are worth a thousand words); Well what can I say, apparently she didn’t have enough words in her head to try to add even a tiny bit of context to the charts. I attached a screenshot.
1/ like, the number of chip developers is growing faster and faster — well yeah, with the market growing, the number of people making shovels grows too, I honestly don’t understand what else you’re supposed to take from this
2/ the funniest part is how she shows charts of number of users or later queries compared to Google — did it not occur to her that internet penetration was a tiny bit different back then versus now, and also everyone has a phone in their pocket and that massively affects adoption speed; all this “fastest-growing product ever” stuff is bullshit, I had one of those too, 100m users in 5 months
3/ and again a chart that growth based on the internet is faster than the growth of the internet itself — yeah no shit, it’s easier to launch a train than to build a railroad
4/ and on the 4th picture it even got kinda funny, I actually got curious — what was the growth at the beginning there in percent compared to now?
