Lately I’ve been running into product again — not just because we’re building one ourselves, but because this problem has gotten more obvious in general. Wanted to give an example using Perplexity. This post is a pure sketch of some general thoughts btw.

Feels like the perfect case. The AI era is only just starting to roll out and this guy shows up and says:
“we’ll beat Google through UX (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5utruJd6Gk)”
(somewhere in that video). And just recently I stumbled on an absolutely wonderful talk by the game director of World of Warcraft (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3b7uWPEN0Ok&t=14853s). In this post I’ll give my opinion and projection, but the presentation is so damn good (even if it’s heavy on game details) that I recommend it to everyone.

So. I want to tie the fight in the AI landscape to this interesting phenomenon called a desire path. It’s that exact thing everyone yells: “listen to your user.” And what we usually get is like in the picture (we want one thing, first we defend, defend, then we give up, and when we give up it’s still not enough) — trying to force your solution at the start can be dumb, and then later it makes sense again. The whole “thinking in paths” concept is pretty interesting in general.

Perplexity goes straight in, attacks head-on, like “look, this is how it should be,” and then gradually weakens because everyone around is literally doing the same thing. And the guys stay stuck in the paradigm of “we solve problems that can’t be solved perfectly.” Design has that property — yeah. Instead of moving forward, the team starts hunting for maximum applied value (https://x.com/aravsrinivas/status/1926690746159034709?s=46), which, unfortunately, just isn’t there. Because people think with emotions and constantly change their minds about already-shipped features: first they’re thrilled, then they go “so why aren’t we developing this.”

Novelty has inherent value, making static solutions short-lived (c) — in other words, novelty matters in and of itself, and you simply can’t ride one trick forever; It’s a big miss to try to saddle the wave of a “successful feature” and repeat it again without building long-term value. That’s why we see a browser, ads, whatever — everything Google has that worked. They’re trying to repeat their initial success by just copying what already existed. But no emotions show up along the way, and I think that’s exactly why the guys need to change the approach at the root.

Everyone go watch the talk, the specifically game-y topics are easy to skip.

UX (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5utruJd6Gk)
World of Warcraft (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3b7uWPEN0Ok&t=14853s)
Novelty has inherent value, making static soltions short-lived (c)
