A year or two ago Sam Lessin gave a great presentation about the venture market and I even pieced it together from DocSend by hand (https://t.me/chillhousetech/380). So yeah, there’s a small update out—if you’re into venture stuff, I really recommend reading it. Not like I agree with every argument, but still the main narrative is roughly this TLDR:
VC IS RAPIDLY REBUILDING ITSELF AROUND A POST-FACTORY MODEL… IT’S NOT AN ASSEMBLY LINE ANYMORE, IT’S A REGATTA; NO STANDARD ROUNDS OR METRICS
- there’s no single VC market anymore… even seed isn’t a “market” anymore. Everyone turned into capital allocators, each one solves their own problems with increasingly custom strategies by stage, sector, etc. And in a world where nobody understands what anything costs, the one with the strong story and good “options on infinity” (i.e. scalability and the possibility of a big pop), plus preferably at least some downside protection, wins.
SFD (Story, Founder, Deal) > “tech”
- Tech is getting commoditized… now it’s more important to be able to tell a story, to sell, to attract and inspire. You need founder-“long-haulers,” because it’s gotten genuinely hard, and an exit/sale is now not fast at all (used to be ~4 years on average; the author is betting on 10+). You need truly engaged people. And yeah, deal structure now decides everything: at early stage the main thing is not to burn out immediately; at late stage you need a story that can raise and digest big money.
KYC / KYB (know your counterpart/business)
- Who’s funding you and WHY, really? What do they want? Who’s your next buyer and why will they buy you? What are their incentives? The world is getting more closed, and VC too. The era of global free market is going away for a while at least. Now everything revolves around individual deals, personal connections, and specific interests. You have to understand who your partners are, and know exactly what you’re selling and for what money.

SFD (Story, Founder, Deal) > "tech"
KYC / KYB (know your counterpart/business)
