Part 4. The difference.
Besides all this noise with funds, I managed to talk to some old acquaintances—someone at Google, someone at Anthropic, whoever where, basically. And I got this weird feeling. In order:

1/ hiring in the Valley is really damn hard, people can be making a million bucks a year total, and where public company stock is the bigger part. And even if the base salary is around 300k, how is a startup supposed to beat that total comp? Like, unless the person is bored and has already bought everything, or money isn’t a priority at all. But that’s probably a rare situation. The attitude is like: what are these startup paper slips to me, they’re worth nothing. So personal involvement matters, and over time it obviously drops. Pulling in strong guys with experience is very expensive.

2/ the gap between research and dev/engineering people. The other day this article came out (https://ai-2027.com/) (I’ve got an unpopular opinion about it). Aside from the fact that I strongly recommend reading it (since the guy in 2021 predicted the next 5 years pretty damn accurately) for general understanding, the important part is something else. It’s basically a reflection of the researchers—how they think and what exactly the top AI labs are pitching. Like, a very similar narrative. Whether it’s true or not, we’ll see. But the engineering half thinks completely differently. There’s little faith there—not only that super-agents will be smarter than humans at everything, but even that writing a normal small product from scratch is almost impossible and it’s pain. The distance in how the future is assessed is huge. And I’m more inclined toward not such a big growth in AI capabilities in the next 5 years as the article paints. Maybe by 2035 it’ll work. And then right after that this article drops (https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/4mvphwx5pdsZLMmpY/recent-ai-model-progress-feels-mostly-like-bullshit) from the applied folks.

3/ a feeling that it’s exactly there that the movement is, the thing that pushes the market forward. Hard to convey. But the density of communication and feedback there is way higher. And one of the reasons is that there are a lot of people in the companies that raise the biggest rounds and ship the most cutting-edge solutions. And the difference between, say, Europe and the conversations here vs there is felt literally.

Do you believe in an all-powerful AI in 3 years?
